By now most have heard of the tragic shooting of seven year old Jnalya Douglas, which took place on a Sunday afternoon while Jnalya was playing at the playground inside the Clinton-Peabody Housing Complex. According to news reports, the shooting occurred during a drug deal that went sour. Jnalya heard the shots fired and went running for cover, and was tragically struck in the head by a bullet. This unfortunate incident has shaken our community to the core. Violence should never be tolerated in our city, and its impact stings even more deeply when an innocent child is the victim.

- Clinton Peabody Peace Rally, Friday May 27th
Fortunately, the police have apprehended the shooter and the result of this success goes much to the residents of Clinton Peabody who witnessed the event and shared their account with the police. This example of community cooperation with the police is worthy of acknowledgment, as such cooperation and collaboration has not always been the case. We are working to have a safe, peaceful summer in our City. The shooting of a beautiful child, playing at a playground is disgusting and can never be tolerated or accepted as the norm.
On Friday, May 27th at 1:00pm the residents of Clinton Peabody Housing complex, the 6th Ward Community Office, SLMPD, and other neighborhood partners will gather for a collective stand for peace. I hope you will consider joining us. We must acknowledge this event, learn from it, and work to create an environment where such incidents never take place.
A Community Standing Together for Peace
Friday, May 27th at 1:00pm

In the 6th Ward we have been blessed with wonderfully dedicated police, firefighters & EMT workers who understand the importance of service and helping those in need. Far too often many of these dedicated city employees work extended hours, are on call during holidays and experience some of the most challenging conditions while performing their duties. When people work very hard and put their lives on the line to help others, it’s just nice to say ”Thank You.” On Thursday, May 19th, we will have the opportunity to say “Thank you” to these great men and women who help take care of our neighborhoods and city. With cooperation from the 6th Ward Community Office and all of the 6th Ward neighborhoods, our ward will host its first annual “6th Ward First Responders Appreciation Day.”

6th Ward First Responders Appreciation Day, May 19th
This is an opportunity for all 6th Ward residents to stop by and show your appreciation to the men and women who work each day in our neighborhood. Whether responding to a police call, a fire, or a health emergency, these men and women are working daily to help protect us and our neighborhoods. The 6th Ward First Responders Appreciation Day begins at 8am on Thursday, May 19th at the Carriage House at the Magic Chef Mansion (3400 Russell). Meals, snacks and drinks will be served to our first responders throughout the day. Also, a special presentation will be made to Chief Dan Isom on behalf of the 6th Ward neighborhoods. Each neighborhood contributed funds for the purchase of solar panels for our mobile speed trailers that are used by our police department. (These speed trailers are what are used to track speeding in our community and help keep our streets and neighborhoods safe.)
Make sure you stop by the event to say “Thank You” to these great men and women. There will be plenty of food and drink. We are so very appreciative of the great community sponsors who have helped to ensure this event will be a success. Thank you to: Magic Chef Mansion, Food Outreach, Stray Dog Theatre, the 6th Ward Community office & EVERY 6th Ward Neighborhood Association & Resident who have volunteered your time, talents and energy. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday!

This past Saturday, February 19th, I had the opportunity to attend several events within the ward. Saturday morning, I was able to host an all you can eat pancake breakfast for the residents of Clinton Peabody. Residents came out in droves to hear what is happening in their neighborhood while enjoying hot pancakes prepared by Chris Cakes St. Louis. By Saturday afternoon, I was sipping tea and having lunch with the women of the 6th Ward at a Ladies Tea Fundraiser at Fleur de Lys. It is impossible to express how much I appreciate the support of the community as I prepare for the March 8th election. I am proud to have represented the 6th Ward for the past four years, and I am truly excited to see what the future holds for our neighborhood.

Self Defense class this Saturday at Fitness Factory
The Self Defense class for 6th Ward women is back by popular demand. This class will take place on Saturday, February 12th at the Fitness Factory located in the downtown loft district.
The 6th Ward Women’s Self-Defense class provides an amazing opportunity for 6th Ward women to feel empowered, learn safety skills and meet other women who live in their community. This class will be taught by Sensei Dave Beardsley who has tailored his instruction just for women. Women are often viewed as easy targets by criminals; at this class women will learn how to defend themselves should they ever be confronted by an attacker.
Special thanks to the Fitness Factory & the 6th Ward Community office for hosting this event for the women in the 6th Ward.

Ald Triplett & the St. Louis Explorers
As you know from recent blog posts, residents from the Tower Grove East neighborhood recently went out door-to-door to recruit neighborhood watch participants and new block captains.
This neighborhood watch program was designed to target the Top 10 Most Underperforming Blocks in the Tower Grove East neighborhood. The weather was cold and rainy during that evening, yet us residents soldiered on to recruit new folks for our block captain program. We were blessed to have the local news stations present to help us spread our message, but also doubly blessed to have the assistance and support from a great organization to help us with our tasks.
