The 6th Ward: Great People with Great Hearts

Chief Isom & 6th Ward residents in front of solar mobile speed trailer

I am always amazed at the great people that live in our ward.  Not too long ago, the 6th Ward Community office, JVL South spearheaded a 6th Ward First Responders Appreciation Day.  This was a day to recognize our police, firefighters and EMT personnel who sacrifice their lives each day to make sure we are safe. On this day of appreciation, all 6th Ward neighborhoods partnered together and served breakfast, lunch and dinner for our First Responders.

Aside from serving the meals, each neighborhood provided a cash contribution to assist our police department and address their needs.  With the money donated from 6th Ward neighborhoods, a solar powered mobile speed trailer was purchased. (more…)

Do You Own a Pet?

We are always excited to have great interns working in the ward throughout the summer and school year. Recently, one of our super interns, Raquel Booker, completed her summer project and wanted to share her findings with our community. Thanks Raquel for all of your hard work!
Owning a Pet in the City of St. Louis

At some point in most every
child’s life, they will end up begging their parents for a dog
or cat. From the small, cute and cuddly to the big and fluffy, people sometimes
forget pets are a huge responsibility for a family to undertake. My name is
Raquel Booker and I will be a senior at Sold an International Studies High
School. Over the past two summers, I’ve been interning with the 6th Ward
community office, known as the JVL – South office via the Purina Pet Advocate
Leadership (PALS) Program. This internship provides high school students with
an opportunity to work in a capacity that relates, on some level, to pets. I
find this work especially valuable, as we have an opportunity to speak up for a
group that is unable to speak for themselves.  This summer, I’ve been
busy researching local city ordinances in order to create a responsible pet
ownership brochure, which will provide an easily accessible overview on
important laws 6th Ward residents need to know.  To make owning a pet so much easier, here
are 5 things you should know: (more…)

A Community Standing for Peace

By now most have heard of the tragic shooting of seven year old Jnalya Douglas, which took place on a Sunday afternoon while Jnalya was playing at the playground inside the Clinton-Peabody Housing Complex. According to news reports, the shooting occurred during a drug deal that went sour.  Jnalya heard the shots fired and went running for cover, and was tragically struck in the head by a bullet. This unfortunate incident has shaken our community to the core. Violence should never be tolerated in our city, and its impact stings even more deeply when an innocent child is the victim.

Clinton Peabody Peace Rally, Friday May 27th

Fortunately, the police have apprehended the shooter and the result of this success goes much to the residents of Clinton Peabody who witnessed the event and shared their account with the police. This example of community cooperation with the police is worthy of acknowledgment, as such cooperation and collaboration has not always been the case.  We are working to have a safe, peaceful summer in our City. The shooting of a beautiful child, playing at a playground is disgusting and can never be tolerated or accepted as the norm.

On Friday, May 27th at 1:00pm the residents of Clinton Peabody Housing complex, the 6th Ward Community Office, SLMPD, and other neighborhood partners will gather for a collective stand for peace. I hope you will consider joining us. We must acknowledge this event, learn from it, and work to create an environment where such incidents never take place.

Let’s Say “Thank You” to our Police & Firefighters

In the 6th Ward we have been blessed with wonderfully dedicated police, firefighters & EMT workers who understand the importance of service and helping those in need. Far too often many of these dedicated city employees work extended hours, are on call during holidays and experience some of the most challenging conditions while performing their duties. When people work very hard and put their lives on the line to help others, it’s just nice to say  ”Thank You.”  On Thursday, May 19th, we will have the opportunity to say “Thank you” to these great men and women who help take care of our neighborhoods and city. With cooperation from the 6th Ward Community Office and all of the 6th Ward neighborhoods, our ward will host its first annual “6th Ward First Responders Appreciation Day.”

6th Ward First Responders Appreciation Day, May 19th

This is an opportunity for all 6th Ward residents to stop by and show your appreciation to the men and women who work each day in our neighborhood. Whether responding to a police call, a fire, or a health emergency, these men and women are working daily to help protect us and our neighborhoods. The 6th Ward First Responders Appreciation Day begins at 8am on Thursday, May 19th at the Carriage House at the Magic Chef Mansion (3400 Russell). Meals, snacks and drinks will be served to our first responders throughout the day.  Also, a special presentation will be made to Chief Dan Isom  on behalf of the 6th Ward neighborhoods. Each neighborhood contributed funds for the purchase of solar panels for our mobile speed trailers that are used by our police department.  (These speed trailers are what are used to track speeding in our community and help keep our streets and neighborhoods safe.)

Make sure you stop by the event to say “Thank You” to these great men and women. There will be plenty of food and drink. We are so very appreciative of the great community sponsors who have helped to ensure this event will be a success. Thank you to: Magic Chef Mansion, Food Outreach, Stray Dog Theatre, the 6th Ward Community office & EVERY 6th Ward Neighborhood Association & Resident who have volunteered your time, talents and energy. Let Your Voice Be Heard in the 6th Ward

Ald Triplett Speaks to Young Voters

I am so grateful for the many interns working each day on my political campaign. As many of you may know, I got my first start in politics working as an intern. Campaigns are exciting, each day there is something different, and they provide a wonderful opportunity to work hard and make a difference in our community. Below is a blog post created by Kimyatta Smith. A college student working in my campaign office. Every vote is important in every election. Far too often, the younger voters in our community fail to come out. We must change this. One vote. One voice. It takes all of us speaking up, to make a difference in our community.  Young people & the not so young, I need your vote. – Kacie (more…)

Preserving our Neighborhoods

Tower Grove Abby

As a kid growing up in the Tower Grove East neighborhood, I attended high school not too far from my home, so on most mornings I would hike the few blocks to St. Elizabeth Academy to make it on time and avoid receiving a tardy slip.  There were a few days, however, that I made it to school late due to my wandering in amazement around the neighborhood.

The Tower Grove East neighborhood represents a special type of beauty. It is a neighborhood rich with history and beautiful architecture. Drive down any street in this community, and I promise you will be amazed by the beautiful homes.  Also, there is rich history connected with this community. Recently, I spoke with a resident who provided me the history of a small home on his block that once served as the slave quarters for a prominent family back in the 1800′s.  As a City, we must do all we can to preserve  these buildings and their rich history. Downtown Safety Meeting this Thursday

Please join me for a 6th Ward Downtown Safety Meeting this Thursday on November 11th at 7pm at Ozzie’s Restaurant located at 1511 Washington Avenue.

Recently, new initiatives have been launched to address safety concerns for those living, working and visiting downtown St. Louis. This will be the first opportunity for 6th Ward residents to hear directly from our police department and other city officials regarding public safety.

Safety is important, and as your Alderwoman I am committed to doing everything I can  to make sure you enjoy a high quality of life in our City. It is my hope that you will attend this forum and invite your neighbors. An informed community is a safe community! Please print the flyer and distribute throughout your loft building and downtown work place.  I look forward to seeing you this Thursday.
