Triplett Introduces Vacant Building Initiative

On Friday, Alderman Kacie Starr Triplett (6th Ward) introduced legislation to tackle the problems caused by vacant and foreclosed properties. The “St. Louis Vacant Building Initiative” will improve neighborhoods and property values throughout the City by holding property owners accountable for the upkeep of their properties. Aldermen Florida, Williamson, Cohn, French, Carter, Kennedy, Gregali and Moore have signed on as cosponsors of the legislation.

“Vacant buildings and foreclosed properties are a drain on our communities, eyesores in our neighborhoods and a significant burden upon city resources,” Triplett said. “This initiative will address these problems and improve the quality of life for every City resident.”

Triplett states her ultimate goal is to rehab and renovate the vacant and foreclosed buildings. Until then, this initiative will shift the burdens of upkeep for these properties away from the City and its taxpayers to the actual property owners, including banks and mortgage companies.

6th Ward delivers for Obama

With an overwhelming 86.6% of the vote for Obama in Tuesday’s historic election, the city’s Sixth Ward came in strong for the president-elect. The ward, represented by Alderman Kacie Starr-Triplett at City Hall, cast 6,146 ballots for Obama – the largest total of any ward in the city.

“I’m so proud of the amazing turnout and support shown by my fellow Sixth Ward residents,” Triplett said. “We showed that President-Elect Obama’s message of hope and changed resonated throughout the central corridor.”

Triplett, who also served as a local spokesperson for the Obama campaign, credited the impressive showing to the hard working Sixth Ward Democratic Organization.

Spearheaded by Committeeman John Maxwell and Committeewoman Bev Bucheit, along with Ward Chairman, Alison Gee, the leaders of the Sixth Ward Obama Canvassing Team, Mary Kay Christianson and Chryssi Ingrassia, and Change to Win Field Organizer, Jack Coatar, the organization implemented successful voter registration drives at Clinton Peabody, local churches and several neighborhood functions. They also registered many of the homeless in downtown Saint Louis and even provided arts-and-crafts childcare services for busy parents on Election Day.
