Today, I went and spoke to the students at St. Elizabeth Academy. A proud graduate of St. Elizabeth Academy, it was a pleasure to speak with the students regarding the importance of public service. (St. Elizabeth Academy is located in the 6th Ward, and has served as a premiere institution to educating young women in south St. Louis City.) What did I say to the students? Well, I gave them a bit of advice. I told them that the future of this country lies with women, and to never get discouraged about being successful in this world. Sometimes when the door to success seems closed, you have do what I do and try and get your “big toe” through the crack of the door….then once you are able to do that, try and wedge your shoulder in…once you get your shoulder in the door, try swinging your elbow out…and then once you have done that, move the rest of your body through the door. As women, we have to stake our claim, and make sure our voice is heard. It’s a movement, that we can’t afford to ever let die. We have too much work to do, to allow that to happen.
