The Tudor Apartments located in downtown St. Louis at 19th & Washington, provides a great example of how local urban development and partnership between local, state and federal governments can work. I was pleased to support the development of this multi-million dollar project as it provides much needed affordable housing in the downtown community.

Downtown should be a place for all St. Louis residents. Whether they are a young professional, a single parent, an elderly couple or a family of four working daily to make ends meet; there must be residential opportunities for all socioeconomic levels in our city.

I am in love with the Tudor development site because it encompasses everything that is great about St. Louis. There is diversity among the residents — they are young, not so young, black, white, single, married, straight, gay, etc. and they are all working together to strengthen their new downtown community.

I recently hosted a public safety meeting where 4th District Police Captain Jerry Leyshock, and the 4th District Public relations officer attended to discuss issues by the residents surrounding a rash of ruthless car break – ins at the Tudor Lofts. After the meeting, a resident, Chad Cohen, stepped up to the plate to become the 6th Ward “Loft Captain” for the Tudor development site. As the “Loft Captain” Mr. Cohen will serve as a liaison to my office and help identify and address any concerns where my office may be of assistance. (It truly takes residents AND elected officials working together to make things happen!)

Mr. Cohen, along with the residents of Tudor, has organized a Community Service Committee within the apartment complex. They are hosting an area food drive for the St. Louis Foodbank. I am always excited to have new residents locate to our ward. For many of the Tudor residents, this is their first time living in our city. Not only are they getting adjusted to living in an urban environment, they are also excited and motivated to make living in St. Louis an even greater place by sponsoring community service events. The Tudor residents provide a great example of how new energy, new development, and diversity fused together, benefit us all.
